Different studies have found that the more materialistic and extrinsically motivated we are, the more depressed and anxious we will be.
We often care too much about gaining that impressive status, wanting to be perceived as living that über cool, enviable lives.
Deep down we tend to have the desire to be seen as superior, to be somewhat envied by other people. And social media has a role in amplifying this to an unprecedented level.
The more we make the number of ‘likes’ on social media as our goals, the less control we have over our own self esteem and happiness.
And even when we’re winning and have successfully achieved that extrinsic goals, we soon realise that they don’t bring lasting happiness.
We feel like we’re back to where we were, and that emptiness that we wish to fill somewhat remains. We’re still depressed & anxious.
So what are we to do? More on that in the next videos.
